Hey Friends!
Today’s newsletter comes to you from the road. I’m visiting my mom in Tennessee. It was her birthday this weekend, so everyone wish her a happy birthday!
Look! It’s my mom :)
I’ve actually got quite a nice essay coming for you, intertwining my feelings about Florida with my review of a recent 100 Gecs show that I’ve been meaning to tell you about for far too long—but! You’ll have to wait another week for that one because life is busy and I’m traveling anyway.
In the meantime, I’ve got the second installment of the Kat Drawls Podcast for you! It’s also an interview, but this one is from a bit deeper in my archives.
Listen: Kat Drawls Podcast: Ep 1 featured the full audio of my really awesome chat with Moby
Disclosure’s fourth album Alchemy dropped last week. It’s a super strong effort, very funky, very dance-forward. It feels like a mature sound from the brothers who have always been soulful beyond their years. I’m still sitting with the whole thing and developing my full critique, but it’s a solid groove and you should listen to the whole thing.
Anyway, in honor of its release, Kat Drawls Podcast: Ep 2 features the full audio of my chat with Disclosure in 2020, right before the release of the duo’s third album Energy. They’re really sweet, intelligent men, so I thought it would be fun to share!
I have hopes to get them on Kat Calls one day, so put that good ‘Energy’ into the universe!
Look! It’s Disclosure
The podcast is below the paywall, because it’s a treat for my paid subscribers (who make me so, so happy). I didn’t wanna leave y’all hanging though, so here is the five-song call out from today’s updated playlists.
Absolutely Necessary
(This is the part where I share songs that are so good, they’re absolutely necessary to listen to. That’s it. That’s the bar.)
I made two Spotify playlists for this section that you can follow: one weekly playlist updated with just the new stuff every week, and one cumulative playlist that will host every song I pick ever (until Spotify tells me it's full). Check them out! I made them for you—and me, but mostly you.
Disclosure - “Higher Than Ever Before”
I have to highlight a Disclosure tune this week, not only because this song is vibe af, but because they’re the subject of this month’s Kat Drawls Podcast :) That’s what men in suits call “synergy.” This is my favorite cut from the album that I’ve heard so far. It’s got liquid drum’n’bass energy mixed with the kind of heavenly sonic textures Disclosure is making its signature. It’s angelic and dirty all at once, which is like, great, imo.
Brontez Purnell - “Blues of Every Night” Feat. Bergo Husky
This video is pretty lofi, and I want to let you know the mix on the audio doesn’t do justice to the incredible funk that comes through on the playlist version of this tune. I’ve never heard of Brontez Purnell before this. I got the release in my inbox. He’s from Oakland, and his entire EP New Jack Swing from which this single is culled is FIRE. It’s joyous and personal and real af and just plain fun to groove to, so don’t miss it.
Biicla - “Gas (4.21)”
Fuck. That’s the only thing you can say when you listen to this song. It’s so fucking grimmmyyyyyyy. This is like old school dubstep meets garage meets grime meets break-your-fucking-neck. Dude, this track is disgusting ←- and you have to say that part with a British accent. The video is dope, too.
Jerry Folk, FENGSEL - “Better Days”
Whatever this genre is, this is my favorite. It’s like, emotional rave garage? Idk, it just hits me in my soul. Halfway into the song, they’re gonna smash you with some switch up, too. Jerry Folk is from Norway. I can’t figure out anything about FENGSEL except that the word means “prison” in Norwegian, which is interesting becaus the lyrics are all like, he can’t escape thoughts about some person so like, idk! Coincidence!
ODESZA, Yellow House - “Waiting Forever” Feat. Preston.
I did not even know Odesza put out an EP called Flaws In Our Design, but they sure done did! It’s a six-track collaboration with a Cape Town-based solo producer named Yellow House. This tune features Preston. on vocals and serves big Panda Bear in his Beach Boys corner-type style. Side note: Panda Bear’s album Reset is very, very good.
Alight, that’s it! Those are the highlights, but there is a lot more on the playlists, so go listen to them on Spotify. Below comes the podcast with Disclosure. Pay me to hear it ;) Besos.
